100_trainElectric trains will travel up to 160 kilometers per hour between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv and will provide savings of hundreds of thousands of workdays, and thousands of tons of fuel and greenhouse gases. The Ministry of Transport is preparing for 2017.

10 viaducts, 20 km of tunnels, three trains per hour in each direction, 300 meter-long platforms, 2.8 million journeys in the first year of operation and only 30 minutes each way - the national project for building the new railway line between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv is materializing right now.

The aim of the project, whose cost is estimated at seven billion Shekels, is to connect Israel’s capital to the Ben Gurion International Airport and to Gush Dan (the Tel Aviv metropolitan area), thus significantly reducing traffic congestion between Jerusalem and the central region.

The 30 minute journey will be on quiet electric trains that can travel at a speed of 160 kilometers per hour. This will turn the railway into a fast, comfortable and safe
alternative to automobiles and buses, and will provide savings of hundreds of thousands of workdays that are currently being wasted in traffic jams at the entrance to Gush Dan, and savings of thousands of tons of fuel and greenhouse gases.

To provide a fast, high frequency and maximum convenience service, a complex engineering and structural effort is being put into the venture. 680 engineers are employed in the project which involves the construction of Israel’s longest and tallest viaducts, and an 11,600 meter-long double tunnel. The engineering works that are being performed are among the most complex and complicated conducted in Israel, and will soon reach their peak when three giant mining machines, similar to the machines that excavated the Channel Tunnel between England and France, will start working along the line. In addition, the HaUma Railway Station is currently being constructed 80 meters underground adjacent to Jerusalem’s central bus station.

Alongside the complex engineering works, extensive environmental protection and development works are underway:
  • Relocation and replanting of 200,000 bulbs and tubers
  • Excavation of approximately 30 archeological sites
  • Landscape restoration covering approximately 450,000 square meters
So be prepared, because in 2017, the journey between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv will be much, much shorter.
